Fold Equity
Fold equity is a poker strategy concept mainly used when it comes to no-limit and pot-limit tournaments.
The concept refers to the equity a player can gain by betting or raising in hope of getting the opponent(s) to fold.
This is particularly interesting when a player is short-stacked in a tournament.
The fold equity can be calculated like this: [gain of equity if opponent(s) fold] x [probability that opponent(s) fold].
No matter if you play at one of the many online poker rooms available or at your local card room – you never know any of these two factors for sure, but in order to calculate the fold equity you have to make educated guesses of the other two factors. The first factor is estimated by valuing the strength of your hand in relation to the range of hands your opponent(s) might be playing. The second factor has to be estimated based on your read on your opponent and his/her previous actions.
The fold equity is an important concept when it comes to all-in situations in tournaments. If an opponent has to call an all-in with large portions or all of his/her stack. The range of hands he/she will make the call with is quite narrow. But the smaller part of the stack that has to be used, the larger the range of hands that the opponent will call you with. You will reach a point when you can’t be sizing your bets any longer and your only option is to go all-in. And at a certain point when your stack is small enough your opponent will call you with any two cards and your fold equity will be zero.
Let’s look at an example on how to calculate your fold equity. Say that you are short-stacked and has seen the flop with one other opponent. You hold Js-Ts and the flop comes Qd-7s-4s. You are not sure where you stand, but you are pretty certain that you are behind and that a fifth spade will win you the hand. You estimate that your chance to win the pot at a showdown is about 35 %. You estimate that the chance that your opponent folds if you go all-in is about 50 %. Your fold equity is about 32.5 % ((1-0.35) x 0.5). So your hand equity if you bet is close to 70 % (32,5 + 35 %).
The fold equity often makes it more profitable to play aggressively, than to be passive, but the important thing is to choose the right spots.
